Self Portrait - Expressing the Age I was Feeling

Counterpoint, 2023, Mixed media, 11 by 14
This piece came together from the pink colour of a favourite shirt and an article about climate change. The facial expression that came through is more frustration of this time in my life, my career, living in my body. It is funny how the bright pink and the expression are counterpoints - they zing off each other.
Why the covered eye? I think I’m holding something back, not looking out into the world but preoccupied with something within. I am reluctant to frankly show anger to world.
One of my friends asked me why I would paint myself to look older. I think I was expressing the age that I was feeling. I am angry about climate change. I supported climate action in the 1980s and it makes me mad that more wasn’t done then to put us in a better position today.
Another friend said about this piece, “this is actually quite profound”. The highest praise! When I was working on this one I didn’t think anything special was happening - I somehow got out of my own way.
